As you are likely aware, drilling anything other than a very
small hole is problematic, as the drill will “corkscrew” in
the thin metal rather than drilling it, often with disastrous
results. This step drill set is a take-off on the Unibit con-
cept, employing two cutting edges rather than one. This
set will tackle a wide range of hole sizes and is titanium
nitride coated for improved wear.

This very handy tool has been in my toolbox for more
than forty years. How many times have any of us left the
workshop to work on a remote job only to fi nd that the
screwdriver we brought either has the wrong style blade
(Phillips vs fl at blade) or the wrong size blade (too big or
too small). As my Dad used to say, “What you don’t have
in your head, you have to have in your feet.” This cleverly
designed tool carries four of the most commonly utilized

bits, held by a magnet in the shank and conveniently
stored in the handle. And, it was made in the good ole
USA (although not likely any more).

Step Drill Set
In the Spring issue, I introduced a number of helpful
cleaning aids for use in machine maintenance work.
These pipe cleaners, which I found among my Dad’s
effects many years ago (Dad was a pipe smoker), are
another useful addition to any toolbox. Because the
fi bers are imbedded into the metal core, there’s little to

no chance of leaving a fuzzy residue that sometimes
happens with Q-tips on a rough surface. In addition, pipe
cleaners can be bent into any shape as well as being
doubled over to make a spring loaded bore cleaner.
I wouldn’t be without them.
