Material Review Board

As noted earlier, the Material Review Board makes decisions as to the disposition of nonconforming material.
The MRB should be comprised of knowledgeable quality and production people, capable of making informed
decisions regarding defective items.

For the MRB to decide the disposition of the item(s), they must have all of the information necessary to make the
correct determination, including but not limited to:

• Customer purchase order

• Associated drawings and specifi cations
• Internal inspection reports
• Customer inspection reports

• Outside laboratory test reports

The disposition provided by MRB can be in one of these four categories: scrap, rework, return to vendor

and accept as-is.

1. Scrap: Items that do not conform to specifi cations and cannot be corrected are scrapped. These items
are considered unusable and are disposed of accordingly, and in some cases, mutilated to assure that

they cannot be reused by anyone.

2. Rework: Items that do not meet specifi cations but can be corrected are repaired to meet the specifi cation.

written approval must be obtained.

3. Return to Vendor: Items can be sent back to the supplier as the rejections or for either replacement

4. Accept As-Is: If the nonconformity is minor in nature and does not affect the functioning of the fi nished
product, then the MRB can approach the customer QC department to ask for their approval to either

modify the purchase order specifi cations or to merely accept the deviations.

So there you have it. The CAR and MRB are essential components of any manufacturing endeavor that embraces the
quality discipline and is respected by its customers as a reliable supplier, committed to producing quality products
and to proactively correct its operations/procedures in response to reported quality lapses.
